February 29th: Saint Oswald of Worcester - He died while washing the feet of the poor.

Oswald of Worcester (died 29 February 992) was Archbishop of York from 972 to his death in 992. He was of Danish ancestry, but brought up by his uncle, Oda, who sent him to France to the abbey of Fleury to become a monk. After a number of years at Fleury, Oswald returned to England at the request of his uncle, who died before Oswald returned. With his uncle's death, Oswald needed a patron and turned to another kinsman, Oskytel, who had recently become Archbishop of York. His activity for Oskytel attracted the notice of Archbishop Dunstan who had Oswald consecrated as Bishop of Worcester in 961. In 972, Oswald was promoted to the see of York, although he continued to hold Worcester also.

As bishop and archbishop, Oswald was a supporter and one of the leading promoters (together with Æthelwold) of Dunstan's reforms of the church, including monastic reforms.[1] Oswald founded a number of monasteries, including Ramsey Abbey, and reformed another seven, including Winchcombe in Gloucestershire and Pershore and Evesham in Worcestershire. Oswald also switched the cathedral chapter of Worcester from secular clergy to monks. While archbishop, he brought the scholar Abbo of Fleury to teach, and he spent two years in England, mostly at Ramsey. Oswald died in 992, while washing the feet of the poor. A hagiographical life was written shortly after his death, and he was quickly hailed as a saint.

EWTN - Vatican Unveils the Holy Lance: A Solemn Tribute to the Soldier of Faith, Saint Longinus

Gedeelte artikel van Jacob Stein - EWTN Vatican

The Holy Lance, also known as the Lance of Longinus, holds a significant place in Christian tradition as the weapon believed to have pierced the side of Jesus during his crucifixion. Tradition holds that the Vatican Basilica has the jealous custody of a relic that is part of the Holy Lance.

The Gospel of John provides the sole biblical reference to this event, recounting that a Roman soldier named Longinus, on the eve of the Sabbath, ensured Jesus' death by piercing him in the side with a lance. This act, as described in John 19:34, has sparked centuries of reverence and fascination across Europe and inside the Vatican.

The diverse narratives surrounding Saint Longinus highlight the widespread devotion and the impact of his acts recorded in the Gospel of St. John and in legends that go beyond the scriptural tradition.

The statue of Saint Longinus, sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and housed in Saint Peter's Basilica, stands as a testament to his role in Christian history. The statue is one of four statues standing in the pillars' niches supporting Michelangelo's dome.

In the Vatican, a special ceremony takes place in St. Peter's Basilica during the first week of Lent. On the eve of the second Sunday of Lent, the canons of St. Peter's Basilica gather with the Archpriest of the Basilica, presently Mons. Mauro Gambetti, and with concelebrating priests and the other ministers. They process to the High Altar, presently under restoration, which marks the tomb of St. Peter. They meet the faithful at the foot of the altar, who are waiting for the liturgy to begin.

The celebrant begins with the opening prayer and incenses the procession cross, which bears the corpus of Christ. The choir sings the litany of the Saints until the intonation of "Saint Peter, pray for us," which is sung three times in honor of the "station," which is kept on this day in Lent. Each day during Lent, the local Church of Rome pilgrimages to a different tomb of a martyr. This pilgrimage is called the Roman Station Church pilgrim itinerary.

Saint Isabel of France — February 26th

Peccantem me quotidie - Carlo Gesualdo

Palestrina: Peccantem me quotidie - I who sin every day Peccantemreeks 3

Peccantem me quotidie
et non penitentem,
Timor mortis conturbat me.
Quia in inferno nulla est redemptio.
Miserere mei, Deus, et salva me.

I who sin every day
and am not penitent
the fear of death troubles me:
For in hell there is no redemption.
Have mercy upon me, O God, and save me.

Peccantem me quotidie by Cristobal de Morales met tekst en Engelse vertaling

Peccantem me quotidie / I sin every day

Peccantem me quotidie

et non penitentem,

Timor mortis conturbat me.

I sin every day

and am not penitent;

the fear of death upsets me:

Peccantem me quotidie

et non penitentem,

timor mortis conturbat me.

Quia in inferno nulla est redemptio.

Miserere mei, Deus, et salva me.

Because in hell there is no redemption.

Have mercy upon me, O God, and save me.

The Glory of These Forty Days - Saint Gregory the Great

1 The glory of these forty days
we celebrate with songs of praise,
for Christ, by whom all things were made,
himself has fasted and has prayed.

2 Alone and fasting Moses saw
the loving God who gave the law.
And to Elijah, fasting, came
the steed and chariots of flame.

3 So Daniel trained his mystic sight,
delivered from the lion’s might.
And John, the Savior’s friend, became
the herald of Messiah’s name.

4 Then grant, O God, that we may, too,
return in fast and prayer to you.
Our spirits strengthen with your grace,
and give us joy to see your face.

Attende Domine et Miserere

Luister, Heer, en heb medelijden,
want wij hebben tegen U gezondigd.

Tot u hoogste Koning, Verlosser van allen,
slaan wij wenend onze ogen op:
verhoor, Christus, de smeekgebeden.

Rechterhand van de Vader, hoeksteen,
heilsweg, hemelpoort,
was weg de smetten van onze vergrijpen.

God, wij vragen uw majesteit:
vergeef genadig onze misdaden.

Tegen U hebben wij misdaden begaan,
met berouwvol hart onthullen wij onze geheimen:
Verlosser, moge uw liefde ze negeren.

Onschuldig gevangen, zonder verzet weggevoerd,
veroordeeld door valse getuigen tegenover goddelozen:
bewaar hen, Christus, die Gij verlost hebt.

13 februari - HH.

Talbot in 1954.
