When we think about Ancient Greece, we most likely think of the Classical Age. The Classical Age saw the flourishing of the polis, or the city-state. At this time, the Hellenic world was largely separated by nascent city-states. These young city-states needed new institutions for governance, leading to the development of modern politics. Many of the city-states were democratic, but the old aristocracy was still influential.
Classical Greece was a turbulent time, beset by wars and the rise and fall of empires. It saw the defeat of the Persians and the rise of Athens, Sparta and Thebes. The rise of Macedon ended the era of the Greek city-state. What is most remarkable about the Classical Age was its cultural, artistic and intellectual achievements. Without this period, the modern world as we know it likely wouldn’t exist.

Dankgebed van de H. Thomas van Aquino na het ontvangen van de H. Communie
Goede God,
Ik dank U, Heilige Heer, almachtige Vader, eeuwige God omdat Gij U hebt gewaardigd mij, zondaar en onwaardige dienaar te verzadigen met het kostbaar Lichaam en bloed van Uw zoon, onze Heer Jezus Christus.
Niet om enige verdienste van mij, maar enkel door de gunst van Uw ontferming. En ik bid U, dat deze heilige Communie mij niet een oorzaak worden van straf, maar een heilzame voorspraak tot kwijtschelding. Zij is mij een wapenrusting van geloof en een schild van goed wil. Zij neemt mijn ondeugden weg en roeit begeerten en wellust in mij uit. Zij vermeerdere in mij de liefde, het geduld en de ootmoed, gehoorzaamheid en alle deugden.
Ze is voor mij een krachtige verdediging tegen de hinderlagen van mijn zichtbare en onzichtbare vijanden. Ze brengt in mij alle beweging van het vlees en van de geest volkomen tot rust en hechte mij vast aan u, de ene en ware God.
Ze is ten slotte de gelukkige vervulling van mijn einddoel. En ik bid U, gewaardig U tot mij, zondaar, te geleiden tot dat onuitsprekelijke gastmaal waar U en Uw Zoon en de Heilige Geest, voor Uw Heiligen het ware licht bent, de volle verzadiging, de eeuwige vreugde, de opperste blijdschap en het volmaakte geluk.
Door dezelfde Christus onze Heer, die met U leeft en heerst in de eenheid met de Heilige Geest. Hier en nu en tot in eeuwigheid.

LORD, Father all-powerful, and ever-living God, I thank Thee, for even though I am a sinner, Thy unprofitable servant, not because of my worth, but in the kindness of Thy mercy, Thou hast fed me with the precious Body and Blood of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this holy communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in power to do good. May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to Thee, the one true God and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with Thee. And I pray that Thou willest lead me, a sinner to the banquet where Thou with Thy Son and Holy Spirit, art true and perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to Thy saints. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
